Abraham Kiptum of Kenya emerges as winner of the Lagos city Marathon

Abraham Kiptum of Kenya has emerge as the winner of the Lagos city marathon which took place yesterday, for the second time after he won the first edition of the race which took place last year, as he cart away the grand price of $50,000.


Kiptum's finishing time of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 20 seconds is a record compared to  the 2 hours 16minutes and 19 seconds recorded in the first edition of the marathon.

Kiptum was joined by fellow country men Ronny Kibos and Kiprotich Kirol who finished as second and third respectively, as the latter ended the race in 2 hours 15 minutes and 25 seconds to claim a cash prize of $40,000 while the former took 2 hours 15 minutes and 30 seconds to claim his own prize of $30,000.

The race kicked off at about 7am Nigerian time at the National stadium Surulere and ended at Eko Atlantic city Victoria island with over 50,000 athletic participating.

It took 2 hours 37 minutes and 51 seconds for the ist Nigerian to cross the finishing line.

Speaking at the prize presentation, Lagos State Governor Akinwunme Ambode said that this is the first step his administration is taking towards the growth of sports in the state, as no stone will be left unturned as he tries to reposition the role of sports in the state.
