Stadium stampede leaves 17 dead, 59 others injured in Angolan city of Uige

Over 17 people have been killed following a stampede that took place at the January 4th stadium in Uige a city in Angola, as fans were trooping in to watch a match between Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo de Libolo.



The stampede reportedly took place when fans were rushing their way into the stadium prior to the kickoff of the match, the stampede left 17 fans dead with 59 others injured.

A statement published on the official website of Recreativo de Libolo, states that
"While the players were on the field, outside fans were trying to get into the stadium and a gate probably gave way to the pressure of the crowd causing several people to fall who were literally trampled on by the crowd,"
