At least six people have died after a nighttime earthquake struck in southern Philippines with 120 others injured, Official have been combing through affected buildings and nearby towns for any other casualties and also to check the length of damages the earthquake had caused.


Residents were woken from their sleep after the 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck in the Surigao del Norte province as hundreds of people were forced to leave their home in search of safety, Renato Solidum of the Philippine institute of Seismology and Volcano-logy stated that the earthquake was centred at about 16 kilometres northwest of the provincial city of Surigao, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres he added.


At least 126 were injured after 6 peopled were reported to have died after being hit by falling debris in Surigao were the earthquake strucked, the earthquake have reportedly knock out power supply and force the closure of the domestic airport due to dip cracks in its runaway.

Several buildings, including a state college, a shopping and a hotel were damaged in the province located 700 kilometres away from the Phillipine capital city of Manila, as the military has urge the New People Army guerrilas not to interrupt the rescue and rehabilitation works currently going on ''we urge you not to attacked our soldiers, military spokesman Col. Edgard Arevalo was quoted as saying.
